How Tasty Picks Happened

As a young teen in the early 60s, Ron Bazar used to work at his Dad’s pharmacy. One of his favorite products was a mint flavored toothpick made back then by Johnson&Johnson. It was great for cleaning the spaces between his teeth, and for gnawing on with his hyper-nervous energy (mostly due to his extreme sugar habit from binging on chocolate ice cream and sugary drinks and much more every day!).

Decades later in the mid-80s, after a restaurant lunch, Ron offered his friend and brilliant marketer and business partner, Ron Trainor, one of those toothpicks. He sure enjoyed them, and so after every meal, a ritual developed where Ron B took out the pack and gave one to Ron T. Both were happy campers!

They got to joking about them, and one day they said the taste needed to be much stronger and should be renamed “Tasty Picks”!

They had a graphic artist do some simple mock-ups, but decided the timing wasn’t right to work on the project.

Sadly, Ron Trainor, one of the early co-founders, passed away in 2008 at only 60 years of age.

In the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, match-packs were used by many businesses and industries as a superb customized promotional freebie. It was also popular for individuals celebrating weddings, family celebrations and milestones. Customized matches were everywhere. People used them on-the-spot, put them in their purse or pocket, and brought them home.

By the mid-80s, smoking cessation began and so smoking and matches were no longer “cool”. And then the bic lighter was invented. Both of these events resulted in the demise of matches as a customized promotional medium by the late 90’s.

A family made business

A Unique Dynamic Duo

Ron Bazar and David Vizel are current co-founders of Tasty Picks International…

… but first some more background.

Around 7 years ago, Ron decided the time was right to make Tasty Picks a reality.

Smoking cessation had worked and nothing had yet come close to replacing the power of such a simple giveaway as customized match-packs.

David’s father, Peter Vizel, a long-time friend and business partner in other natural product ventures over the decades quickly joined Ron to get the idea going.

Peter organized a logo design contest and one remarkable logo stood out from all the other designs. It was easily the winner with its compelling graphics, shape and by-line to reflect the many uses of Tasty Picks.

An early website was also developed but suddenly Peter passed away and the idea lay dormant again until recently…

Peter’s firstborn son, David, Ron’s godson, had come to Canada from Hungary.

David had understood the potential of Tasty Picks as a teen as he was taught much of his father’s marketing methods who had become a “marketing guru” in Hungary.

Ron and David joined forces combining decades of business experience with youthful insights and tech/biz smarts, finally launching Tasty Picks International as both a consumer product and a high-tech/soft-tech new promotional media.
